Background

After a vocational training in media design, I studied Biology at Utrecht University from 2009 to 2015 (BSc + MSc). After this, I have explored the evolution of microorganisms using mathematical and computational modelling under supervision of Paulien Hogeweg. I received my PhD degree (cum laude) in September 2020. This thesis resulted in multiple theories on how microorganisms adapt to their environment, in particular with respect to horizontal gene transfer. Here at MPI I work as a postdoc to study the dynamics of horizontal gene transfer in compost communities, compare these dynamics to the models from my PhD, and to improve future models.

Research interests

Eco-evolutionary dynamics of microbes, structured populations, horizontal gene transfer, mutualistic / antagonistic interactions, and whatever else happens on a grain of sand.
